One week countdown to Bell Let's Talk Day

On February 9, send a text or make a long-distance call with Bell to support mental health Join Canadian Olympian Clara Hughes in the conversation about mental health at bell.ca/letstalk MONTRÉAL, February 2, 2011 -- It’s just one week until Bell Let’s Talk Day on February 9, when Canadians can help fight the stigma around mental illness and support new mental health initiatives by sending a text message or making a long distance call with Bell and Bell Aliant that day. Bell Let’s Talk Day is a high-profile anti-stigma effort that is part of the Bell Mental Health Initiative, a five-year, $50-million charitable iniative dedicated to promoting Canadian mental health. For every text message sent and every long distance call made by Bell and Bell Aliant customers on February 9, Bell will donate 5 cents to programs dedicated to mental health. Regular long distance and text message charges apply. Bell Let's Talk Day is supported by a national promotional campaign focused on the worldfamous smile of Clara Hughes, Canada’s six-time Olympic medalist, who relates her own story of depression in the campaign. In advance of Bell Let’s Talk Day, Canadians can join Clara in the mental health conversation by visiting bell.ca/letstalk. "Most of the 1 in 5 Canadians who suffer, and their families too, are afraid to talk about the disease. That means they won't get the help they need,“ said Ms. Hughes. “That has to change, and I'm proud to support Bell Let's Talk Day to get the conversation started." Mental illness is one of the most pervasive yet underfunded health issues in the country, and it’s a topic many are simply reluctant to talk about. The Mental Health Commission of Canada reports stigma is the main reason two-thirds of people living with mental illness don't seek help. That’s why Bell has made anti-stigma efforts one of the four pillars of its Mental Health Initiative, along with support for improved community care, new research and workplace initiatives in partnership with other Canadian corporations.
